Your Mind is Killing You. Literally.

The primary obstacle preventing you from having a pain-free body and the functional mobility you desire—whether it's climbing mountains, playing with your grandkids, or simply walking around campus—is your mind. Our minds are constantly active, and while you can't turn them off, you can direct them in a way that benefits you. If you don't guide your mind towards the thought patterns you want, it will take control and lead you right off the cliff. One of the mind's key functions is to scan for danger, which is useful, but we live in a relatively safe era. Our food is processed, cleaned, and safe from parasites and bacteria. Many of us have access to clean, drinkable tap water. As apex predators, animals fear us, not the other way around. So, what should we fear? If you let your brain decide, it will lead to unparalleled anxiety, depression, chronic pain, and fatigue. It's remarkable how our brain usage has evolved over the past century. I recommend exploring Iain McGilchrist's book, "The Master and His Emissary." We've become predominantly left-brained, neglecting the right brain, which provides perspective, emotional management, and helps discern real threats. The right brain connects us with others and helps us understand our surroundings. Without it, the left brain dominates, perceiving everything as a threat—work, neighbors, social events, assignments, phone calls—until you find yourself isolated and fearful of the outside world and even your own home. We can't discern real danger from perceived threats, including what we see online. We can not accurately assess that social media post. We become pawns in other peoples games. After 30 years of working with people, I've observed how fear at 18 can lead to stagnation at 30, chronic illness at 40, and existential doubt at 50. The cycle worsens as the mind takes over, and the body and soul suffer. Yet, change is possible. I've witnessed remarkable transformations when people choose to change their mindset. It's straightforward but not easy. You must change your mind. Together, we'll explore how to transform your mindset every 30 days. It requires time, but it's achievable. Start today by re-engaging your right brain. This is simple and enjoyable. Begin each day by connecting with nature. Even in a big city, it's possible. A walk around the block can reveal birds, blooming trees, and the feel of warming air on your skin. Observe how you feel in nature. If you think it's unsafe or there's no nature, let your right brain question these thoughts. Spend 30 days immersing yourself in nature—observe, smell, listen, and note your experiences. Write down what you see, hear, smell, and feel. After 30 days, reflect on any changes. Perhaps you notice less road rage, more patience with family, or improved taste in food. Check back next month for more joy, peace, and delight. Until then, be well. Brenda
